Ting Ting Jahe

Have I mentioned my new addiction? Ting Ting Jahe- Ginger soft candy chews made in Indonesia. Imagine Starburst that taste like fresh ginger. I cannot stop eating these things. They burn the tongue, singe the throat and put a fiah in yo belly, but OMIGAWD they taste SOOOOOOOO good.

I’m not sure where they fit in the candy hierarchy. We have- Red Vines. Gummi Bears from Germany, black licorice, Swedish Fish and now this. Red Vines take the top spot because its tradition. Then black licorice. It would be first, but quality varies. Some licorice tastes green, some tastes brown. Brown is best. But I think now the ginger candy has taken the number 3 spot from Gummi Bears. It is more addictive, plus the texture is better. It is chewy rather than elastic. I think the heat of the ginger acts much as chilis do with their capsacin- maybe the pain causes a tiny endorphin rush or something that makes eating these addictive.

I’ve gone through phases of ginger candy addiction. For a while I was bringing ginger candy in to my previous job, but I stopped because one co-worker ended up eating the bulk of the ginger candy I brought in. I used to pick it up when I stopped at my favorite Korean lunch place (but I think it might have been Indonesian candy, like yours).

OMgah. You like these for serious? haha I’ve only eaten those out of desperation for some form of sugar, used to toss them away. Too much of the burning. I’d rather my teeth hurt than my tongue burn…

Not sure if I like them or if I find them strangely hard to not eat.

Heat is good though, I’ve spent years increasing my heat tolerance. You miss out on so much good food when you don’t like hot stuff.

Was looking for an old Palmieri version (I think that’s the version I have in my head–though I’m not positive). Anyway, nice to give Andy Harlow some attention for a change.
